“As my act of resistance… I’ll plant a garden”

There seems to be so many issues across the world that are fighting for our attention. In the midst of a world that appears to be spiralling out of control on many fronts, to Plant a Garden is to care for what remains and to bring beauty and order to that which is in our control.

This designed is based off of Kyle's song Plant a Garden which explores the idea that instead of worrying about all the things that are beyond our control… maybe the best thing we can contribute to the world is to simply care and tend for the small square footage beneath our feet; to plant flowers, to tend a garden, and to care for our neighbourhood. The song proposes the idea: “when there’s chaos around us, we should care from the ground up, and keep growing beautiful things”.

On the Vine 03:22
The winding road, the gentle rain I feel a cold, mist on my face The fields are bare, but in due time Soon the fruit will ripen on the vine The swaying cedars, and the mossy floor Up ahead, is an open door Breath in deep, the smell of pine Soon the fruit will ripen on the vine Oh, don’t miss a moment Each new day’s a gift to open Those who sow with tears They will reap a harvest Soon the fruit will ripen on the vine The cherry blossoms in early May Colour the coastline, we’re on our way. To new beginnings, to the new wine Soon the fruit will ripen on the vine Oh, don’t miss a moment Each new day’s a gift to open Those who sow with tears They will reap a harvest Soon the fruit will ripen on the vine The glacier glows, as the sun goes down Between the peaks, lights leaking out As sparks float upward, into the night Soon the fruit will ripen on the vine

Been thinking I should settle down here one day And finally put some roots down in the ground Til then I’ll keep on travelling down this highway Chasing neon lights in another town I found a dandelion in my suitcase I thought it must have been there by mistake Maybe the wind was trying to tell me something Maybe someone didn’t have the words to say And now wherever I go, I’m reminded I am not alone I am not alone I kept it hanging from my rearview mirror Somewhere close I would always see Though we are miles apart from each other I still hold close your memory And now wherever I go, I’m reminded I am not alone I am not alone Now you are gone but your words have never left me I still hear them when I close my eyes Til the end of the age, said you would be with me For all of my days all of my life

Loose Ends 04:04
If you pull the thread long enough, you can watch it unwind Turn the run underneath your feet into a puddle of twine When questions lay unanswered, and old answers don’t sit right And you lie awake, and cannot shake all the thoughts from your mind Before the mirage disappeared, there was a time it all seemed so clear What if I never feel certain again Finding more questions than answers It seems the longer I’m here the less I know Holding all the loose ends, we are making it up as we go I used to feel certain of - the world in which I lived Those were simpler times in 99 - when I was a kid Now everything is different, and I’m not sure whose to blame Is it the fault of institutions, or just a coming of age Before the mirage disappeared, there was a time it all seemed so clear What if I never feel certain again Finding more questions than answers It seems the longer I’m here the less I know Holding all the loose ends, we are making it up as we go

No Words 04:02
I know that you’re afraid Still trying to cope with so many unknowns I hear in the way That you’re voice starts to shake When you call me on the phone But i will hold you tonight I will hold you tonight I have no words Nothing more to say All i can offer is to stand in the rain And I’ll brave the cold To give a shoulder to cry on Or a hand you can hold I wish i understood All that you’re feeling inside I wish that I could Step into your mind So i could fend off the giants And you could just hide When the rains are coming down And your heart is full questions And no answer can be found I will hold you close So you don’t have to ever Go it alone I will hold you tonight I will hold you tonight

Modern Times 03:28
When the school burnt down, and the factory closed When all the lights went out, it was the final blow And how are we supposed to move on? How do we read the signs? Yeah, it’s hard enough growing up, in these modern times Hope deferred would make the best of us sick I ask if you’re okay, you say “I am getting used to it” Used to have visions of being something But now you close your eyes and just see nothing Just trying to get by, growing up in these modern times You don’t see it now, but maybe down the road This will all make sense, maybe then we’ll know Why did things have to fall apart? Under the weight of gravity Now I’m blinded by the darkness Open my eyes to see Hope deferred would make the best of us sick I ask if you’re okay, you say “I am getting used to it” Used to have visions of being something But now you close your eyes and just see nothing Just trying to get by, growing up in these modern Time - it’s all we have, it’s all we’ll ever know Time - is like a thread, unravelling so I will not forget To make the most of what we have What sunlight’s left

This world and it’s problems Are too big for me I’m just a drop in the bucket And my hands are weak I’ve stressed and I’ve wrestled I’ve lost nights of sleep Over things far beyond My control and my reach I remember you growing Flowers, and showing Me how to care for the dirt You said, “trust me when I say If the world goes the wrong way Beauty will save the earth” So I’ll plant a garden Of flowers and things that will bloom Tend to my yard and In time I’ll taste of its fruit As my act of resistance, I’ll work with persistence and care for my neighbours too I’ll plant a garden Like you taught me to I’ve heard rumours of war and Bombs in the night They say “they’re conspiring to get us” And maybe they’re right But God only knows when The day or the time when we’ll all face the curtain to say our goodbyes I remember you told me Of flowers growing Through cracks of war torn streets You said, “when there’s chaos around us, to care from the ground up and keep growing beautiful things” So I’ll plant a garden Of flowers and things that will bloom Tend to my yard and In time I’ll taste of its fruit As my act of resistance, I’ll work with persistence and care for my neighbours too I’ll plant a garden Like you taught me to I remember you told me That there is only So much we can bear You said it’s better to live simple Let your world get little And care for the people there

Every drop of water is a part of the chorus In the song of the river and hum of the forest All nature bears witness to a wonderful thing that there is a song that always has been There’s a song inside of everything Every man, every tree, and the rolling sea And the dawn awakens a melody and it's sung through all the galaxy Ah, ah, ah, ah Can you hear the sound of the Maker’s praise? all around us in soil, sky and wave Is a thread of genius that weaves through everything every cell and atom learning how to sing There’s a song inside of everything Every man, every tree, and the rolling sea And the dawn awakens a melody and it's sung through all the galaxy Ah, ah, ah, ah every human bears the image like reflections in the water we are oceans apart we are sister and brother inside of our hearts formed from the clay is a rhythm and a melody a common song we all make There’s a song inside of everything Every man, every tree, and the rolling sea And the dawn awakens a melody and it's sung through all the galaxy Ah, ah, ah, ah

The flowers of the field Are here and gone tomorrow The grasses dry and wither and they’re remembered here no more When I think about my life it all just feels so fleeting my work and my ambition like chasing after the wind There has got to be more than this I’m trying to find a better way I’ve tightly held life within my grip Just to watch it slip away Today I watched the sunrise There was mist in the morning The sky was painted orange and I couldn’t look away Cause haunts me to know I’m just looking in the mirror As the colours fade from my eyes and the clouds roll away There has got to be more than this I’m trying to find a better way I’ve tightly held life within my grip Just to watch it slip away Oooh, ooh I am but a vapour, I'm only here for a moment Soon we’ll be gone with the wind Even if I’m dying, I wanna make the most of Whatever moments we have left Oh, here today and gone the next Oh, I am… but a breath

Tonight 04:47
Tonight, let’s watch the stars Lay down, a blanket in the yard It’s just the two of us, lost in the universe tonight I see the - stars reflection, in your eyes Don’t know if constellations, ever shone so bright It’s just the two of us, Lost in the universe tonight Some might say our head are in the sky Watching satellites passing by And I really don’t think I mind I’m just glad that our stars aligned Tonight Now I’m moonwalking, and there’s no coming down and I feel - light as a feather, when I have you around And It feels so right just the two of us Lost in the universe tonight Yeah it feels so right just the two of us Lost in the universe tonight Some might say our head are in the sky Watching satellites passing by But I really don’t think I mind I’m just glad that our stars aligned Tonight And I’m still lost in orbit, Still caught in your gaze After all of these years, travelling through space If I lose my direction, At least I’ll have you My forever companion, My forever I do

Buried underneath the weight dirt and this forgotten soil Is there any hope of change? of rain, of daylight, I don’t know Feels like it’s gone on like days like this and when I close my eyes It’s my one reprieve, I start to dream, to hope for better times And a voice it says to me Don’t lose hope In the darkness That’s where roots begin to grow Don’t lose hope It’s always darkest Before the dawn begins to glow I replied, “I’ve met your kind before, So please don’t lie to me I’ve got hope deferred Your cheques have bounced a time Or maybe three Now I’m worn and tired Yeah I don't have the time or energy To try to visualise my glass as anything but half empty Still the voice it says to me Don’t lose hope In the darkness That’s where roots begin to grow Don’t lose hope It’s always darkest Before the dawn begins to glow Light will come again We don’t have to worry ‘bout it This is not the end The dark is where the garden started
